Before you drill ceramic tile clean the surface with soap and water and put masking tape in the shape of an x over the area you re drilling. In this video i show how i drilled through some porcelain tile. Really when you re drilling through porcelain or tile the bit isn t actually drilling at all. Have the right bit for ceramic tile.

Then hold the drill bit over the center of the x and use a hammer to tap it lightly until you ve made a small dent in the tile s glaze. Normal masonry or tile bits wont work. While that sounds expensive a inch diamond tipped tip costs under 20 and a carbide bit of the same size can be had for less than 10. The diamond coated end of the tile bit or hole saw is specifically made to drill through tile and porcelain.

Porcelain requires a diamond tipped bit. The diamonds create friction and rub through the tile. Ceramic tile can be drilled with a carbide bit while glass and porcelain call for a diamond tipped bit. Follow the five rules below for a step by step guide on how to drill tiles.
